Illusion.
An illusion is a distortion of the senses, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. While illusions distort reality, they are generally shared by most people.[1]
About life spiritually there are two extreme views everything in this world is real and for salvation you have to move from here to somewhere else. The other point of view is that this whole world is an illusion and reality is here and now once you are aware of the illusion.
We are in a predicament; everyday life is real to us. We are alive, we go to work, earn money, have family and we have pain & pleasure. So what is true?
There is a Zen story,
Nothing Exists
Yamaoka Tesshu, as a young student of Zen, visited one master after another. He called upon Dokuon of Shokoku.
Desiring to show his attainment, he said: “The mind, Buddha, and sentient beings, after all, do not exist. The true nature of phenomena is emptiness. There is no realization, no delusion, no sage, no mediocrity. There is no giving and nothing to be received.”
Dokuon, who was smoking quietly, said nothing. Suddenly he whacked Yamaoka with his bamboo pipe. This made the youth quite angry.
“If nothing exists,” inquired Dokuon, “where did this anger come from?” – (2)
That is the reality, the world as we see it, is in a way real. Advaita defines it in different way
As per Hindu ‘Advaita’ philosophy, Illusion is something which is not true and not false. Whereas in general usage it is common to assume that illusion is false, Hindu philosophy makes a distinction between Maya (illusion) and falsehood. In terms of this philosophy ‘maya’ is true in itself but it is not true in comparison with the truth. – (1)
” Like all monisms Vedanta posits a distinction between the relatively and the absolutely Real, and a theory of illusion to explain their paradoxical relationship………………………. Their apparent separation is an illusory fissure deriving from ignorance and maintained by 'superimposition'. …………….” ---- (4)
The Hinduism says, we are all aware that the dreams are real in the dream state (until you wake up); same way whatever is happening now looks real in the waking state. But only the underlying consciousness of all the three states of waking, sleep and dream alone is real. Ramana Maharishi explains this,
“There is only one state, that of consciousness or awareness or existence. The three states of waking, dream and sleep cannot be real. They simply come and go. The real will always exist. The `I' or existence that alone persists in all the three states is real.” – (3)
