Be as you are.
If we have completely understood our discussions then we have nothing to hold on, non where to go, then what do we do?
Let us not make a belief out of what we have understood, that is of no use because life is dynamic, ever changing. The following Zen story explains that.
Finding a Piece of the Truth One day Mara, the Evil One, was travelling through the villages of India with his attendants. he saw a man doing walking meditation whose face was lit up on wonder. The man had just discovered something on the ground in front of him. Mara’s attendant asked what that was and Mara replied, “A piece of truth.”
“Doesn’t this bother you when someone finds a piece of truth, O Evil One?” his attendant asked. “No,” Mara replied. “Right after this, they usually make a belief out of it.” (1)
Moral of the story, if we find truth instead of understanding it we make a belief out of it, build institutions, begin worship and fight for power or prominence within that institution. This is the ego which acts on and once again we begin the cycle of conflict and chaos.
“Be as you are”, psychologically without effort is widely told in Zen. In Tamil the Siddhas have told this as “Summa Iruththal”. “Summa Iruththal” means being without any activity, not physical but psychological. Physically all these people were active. Laziness will not help in anyway realization and in no way the “Be as you are” or “Summa Iruththal” means laziness. Sri Ramana Maharishi practiced silence as the way of imparting grace for many years.
“A devotee may attain ‘liberation’ by being in the supreme state of quietude. That is to say, being in the state of quietude, bereft of one’s ignorant egoism, enables a devotee to attain the state of eternal bliss.” – (Tirumantiran -1579 ) - (2)
“But what would happen if we gave up the goal?
What would a journey without a goal be like?
You move with the flow of water, with the changing landscape. …………., you just want to be present in your journey, be compassionate with each step, have fun each moment along the way. The destination becomes irrelevant.
No destination or goal matters if they are all good. Each step along the way, then, becomes the destination, and is exactly where you should be.“ (3)
Zen Masters say “Don’t seek truth just drop your opinions”
"Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes, and the grass grows by itself." (4)
We will see a Zen story,
A Cup of Tea
Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen. Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor's cup full, and then kept on pouring.
The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. "It is overfull. No more will go in!"
"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?" (5)
Let us empty our minds of all opinions, memories and be as we are – the infinite consciousness.
“There is no seeing. Seeing is only being. The state of Self-realization as we call it, is not attaining something new or reaching some goal which is far away, but simply being that which you always are and which you always have been. All that is needed is that you give up the identification of the not-true as true. “ (6)
This is the ultimate truth there is nothing more than this.
