The Journey called Life
Is our Life a journey between birth and death with maximum collection of experiences as the goal? Hinduism divides life into four stages which most of you may know.
1. Student life (Bachelor Life)
2. Married Life.(householders Life)
3. Forest dweller or Hermit (detached life)
4. Ascetic stage (Renounced)
Each stage is having duration of 25 years. Each period has definitive goals .
There are defined three paths to salvation Work, devotion & knowledge (Karma, Bakthi & Gnana)
Everything is so defined and we only have to walk in the set path and reach the goal of what normally called as “Salvation”. But does this happen? Never: We all know that. Read the trailing paragraph that will sound like our voice, the reality,
“Human society has been around for tens of thousands of years. More than 1,000 generations of humans have walked the earth. ………….. About 110 billion humans have existed throughout history. Of those, very few have left traces of their existence, apart from a few bones maybe.
You are a Fellow Traveler on this journey called Life. Like me, you have read all the books, including The Secret, The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People, Who Moved My Cheese?... –you name it. You have attended countless seminars. Yet, you have not achieved the results you desire. You had hoped to get to the Promised Land through those books or seminars, yet they were not the ticket.
………..I did attend Mr.xxxxxx………….’ “Firewalk” seminar. I walked over burning coals! Now, I thought, Life will finally give me all that I’ve been hoping for. No, not really. Where did I end up after walking on fire? Simply at the other side, which looked just like the place where I started.” ------- (1)
So with little common sense we can understand that what is important is not the imagined goal but the reality of the journey, the journey of life, which is every day, every minute, and every second. The goal is not some imagined Utopia or a different experience but the reality of consciousness. Realization is not at the end but it is our own self or consciousness which is the very beginning. Life is a continuous flow it is not compartmentalized into three or four stages. Realization is not through a method, it does not involve time that is why zen talks about a moment or a word.
Read what Ramana Maharishi says,
“Our real nature is mukti. But we are imagining we are bound and are making various, strenuous attempts to become free, while we are all the while free. This will be understood only when we reach that stage. We will be surprised that we were frantically trying to attain something which we have always been and are……….” , “…………………Knowing the Self is being the Self, and being means existence, one's own existence……………………………..” ---- (2)
What is told by Ramana Maharishi above is the plain truth. If that is not clear to you read the following story,
A Single Breath
The Buddha asked a Shramana [monastic],
‘How long is the human life span?’
He replied, ‘A few days.’
The Buddha said,
‘You have not yet understood the way.’
He asked another Shramana,
‘How long is the human life span?’
The reply was, ‘The space of a meal.’
The Buddha said,
‘You have not yet understood the way.’
He asked another Shramana,
‘How long is the human life span?’
He replied, ‘The length of a single breath.’
The Buddha said,
‘Excellent. You have understood the way.’
- The Buddha
(Section 38 of ‘The Sutra in 42 Sections’) ------- (3)
Live the moments and understand that you are consciousness itself and nothing more.
