Thinking
Thought or thinking generally refers to any mental or intellectual activity involving an individual's subjective consciousness. (2)
“Thinking is the systematic transformation of mental representations of knowledge to characterize the actual or possible states of the world, often in service of goals.” (1)
“Thinking is directed towards achieving some desired state of affairs some goal that motivates the thinker to achieve some results.” (1)
The simplest definition though I have taken points 3 & 4 out of context and it does clearly state what thinking is,
“Content Is Thinking, Thinking is Content” (3) “Idea is the object of thinking” ( 4 )
“Much of our thinking left to it self is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or downright prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and what we produce, make or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought.” (5)
The above two statements (4 & 5) will clearly tell you why our life is in shambles.
We call experience as our life: which is nothing but thoughts. Thinking is the basis of our day to day life but our thinking is quite limited and distorted and so is our life.
Further to understand the limitations of thinking, in Malcom Gladwels book “Blink” read the story of the “Statue did not look right”.
When an old statue was brought to the museum to be sold, though the records and statue proved to be old, some experts felt that the statue did not look right. It was found that the statue was found to be a fake after 18 months of research. Instinct told it in the first place when knowledge could not do that. (6)
What is thought made of? Thought is matter, probably measurable. And it comes from the accumulated memory, which is matter, stored in the brain. Thought has its origin in the past, recent or remote. Can one be aware of thought as it arises out of the past- the recollections of the past, the action of the past? (7)
So now we are aware that the thinking is the culprit. It has helped our physical world greatly but has muddied our psychological life, so what next?
Like Lao Tzu said, “A thousand Kilometre journey starts with the first step”, we have started our journey let us continue our discussions.
